You are cordially invited to the 2008 Fall Issue Forum: Forest Management Solutions for Mitigating Climate Change in the U.S. Thursday, November 20, 2008 (Light snacks and refreshments will be served) Room 1302 – Longworth House Office Building Presenters: Dr. John Helms, Professor Emeritus, Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management University of California – Berkeley Dr. Robert Malmsheimer, Associate Professor, College of Environmental Science and Forestry followed by question, answer and discussion National Capital SAF held its 2008 Fall Issue Forum: Forest Management Solutions for Mitigating Climate Change in the U.S. on Thursday, November 20, 2008. Dr. John Helms, professor Emeritus, Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, University of California – Berkeley, and Dr. Robert Malmsheimer, associate professor, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York presented, followed by question, answer and discussion. The forum focused on recently released SAF Task Force report highlighting the contributions that forests and their management can make in helping to mitigate climate change. The forum was held in two sessions – one with congressional staff and the second with SAF members and others in the forests community. Each session was well-attended and achieved our goals of highlighting the Task Force report and to present SAF as a source of thoughtful, science-based information on the role of forests and forestry for policy discussions on climate change. The National Capital Society of American Foresters invites its members and the entire area forestry community to participate in this forum to discuss this recent Special SAF Task Force Report that highlights the contributions that forests and their management can make in helping to mitigate climate change. The key objectives of this Forum are to highlight the Task Force report, position SAF as a source of science-based, information and to set the stage for discussions with policy makers when the new Administration takes office. The presenters are the lead authors of this important report. Policy makers, foresters, and all who have an interest in the nation’s forests will find this forum useful in working toward new approaches to managing the nation’s forest resources. Climate change and ways to address it are of keen interest to policy makers and stands to be an important environmental topic in coming years. SAF has an important role to play as an expert in the field of forests and forest management, and as an organization that can help bring science-based information to the discussion. All who have an interest in the nation’s forests and how they can be part of the solution to addressing atmospheric pollution and global climate change will find this forum useful.
