Volunteer Opportunity With the American Chestnut Foundation

The National Capital SAF is interested in beginning a volunteer relationship with the Virginia and Maryland Chapters of the American Chestnut Foundation.  Here is a great opportunity for office-bound foresters to get into the field to do a little work that is near and dear to our hearts, while helping a worthy organization!

The first opportunity to help the ACF is a planned prep day near the Mt. Zion Church, Saturday March 22, starting at 10 am.

The work will be to prepare a new orchard site for planting, specifically putting in stakes, digging holes for planting, distributing mulch, and putting number tags and tree shelters onto the stakes.

Volunteers will need gloves, some small sledge hammers, a few pitchforks, a few wheel barrows or buckets for moving mulch, and a few small shovels.

The work would take take at least two hours, but probably will require more time.

The location is near Gilberts Corner, which is the intersection of Routes 50 with Route 15 in Northern Virginia.  The historic brick Mt. Zion church is about one mile east of the intersection on the south side of Route 50, easy to see, and has parking for extra cars.  The orchard site is just little way up a road that goes north from the church.  Vehicles can drive to the orchard site, however the site will not hold a large number of vehicles, so the option is to park at the church and hitch a ride with someone else up to the site.

The ACF has asked us to RSVP how many NCSAF members will be coming.  Thus, please send an email to Jim Culbert, < jculbert@fs.fed.us>, before March 19th if you plan to attend.  Please indicate if you can bring any of the requested tools.

There will be additional opportunities with the ACF later this Spring and also later this year.  Included will be planting seed at the Mt. Zion site, and pollinization work at various locations in Maryland and Virginia.
Further details on these opportunities will be provided once plans are finalized.

Please contact Jim Culbert, 202-205-0854 (w), if you have any questions.
