NCSAF Luncheon: Forest Certification and its Role in Government Policy Friday, June 24 th at Hall of States On Friday, June 24, NCSAF will host a luncheon at the National Association of State Foresters office in the Hall of the States, Room 283. Steve Koehn and Nadine Block will discuss forest certification and its role in government policy. Socializing and catching up will begin around 11:30 am, and the NCSAF chapter-update portion of the meeting will start around 11:45 am. The talk will be from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. This is a brown bag, so please bring your own lunch and beverages. Location: Hall of the States (Rm. 283), located at 444 N. Capitol Street, NW near Union Station. RSVP: There is no need to RSVP for the lunch, but please bring an ID, and arrive early to allow enough time for signing in and going through security to enter the building. Nadine Block is the Senior Director of Government Outreach at the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), a Washington, DC-based non-profit that operates a North American forest certification standard and promotes responsible forest management and a sustainable fiber supply chain. Nadine is responsible for SFI federal and state policy activities related to green building, climate change, energy, and combating illegal logging. Prior to joining SFI at the start of 2010, she held positions as Director of Forest Policy at the American Forest & Paper Association and Program Manager at the Pinchot Institute for Conservation. Nadine holds a master of forestry degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a bachelor's degree in biology from Williams College. Steven W. Koehn has been Director and State Forester of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, since February 2001. He is responsible for statewide delivery of all technical and financial forestry assistance on both public and private lands. Steve was recently awarded a Champion of Trees award from the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation for advancing public forestry policy. His office is responsible for the management of the 200,000-acre State Forest system, all of which are dual certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forest Stewardship Council Standards. He is currently past president of the National Association of State Foresters, and has held leadership positions in the Chesapeake Bay Program Forestry Workgroup, Society of American Foresters, Maryland Association of Forest Conservancy District Boards, Maryland Forests Association, and the American Forest Foundation's Center for Conservation Solutions Operating Committee. He currently serves on the Board of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. Koehn received his Bachelor of Science, Forest Science, from Pennsylvania State University. |
