Agroforestry Contributions Toward the Global Environmental Conventions on Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Desertification

3 rd floor, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW
Entrance: from Jefferson Court, ½ block west of Smithsonian Metro Station mall exit

Presenter:  Dr. Dennis Garrity, Director-General, World Agroforestry Centre, Nairobi, Kenya

Dr. Garrity will provide a luncheon presentation to highlight the work that the World Agroforestry Centre is carrying out with host countries and partners to contribute toward the global environmental and economic objectives addressed by the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD), and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The World Agroforestry Centre (www.icraf.org), also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry, was established in 1978 in Nairobi as an independent international research institution.  During the 1980’s, ICRAF focused on providing information on agroforestry techniques to improve rural livelihoods in Africa.  In 1992, ICRAF joined the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research system following a decision to include forestry and agroforestry research in CGIAR’s manadate.  In the same year, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) was established under the CGIAR in Bogor, Indonesia.

Dr. Garrity graduated in agriculture from Ohio State University, subsequently earning his M.Sc. in agronomy from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños and his doctorate in crop physiology from the University of Nebraska.  For 10 years he worked for ICRAF in Southeast Asia on agroforestry alternatives to slash and burn agriculture and conservation-oriented agroforestry systems for sloping uplands.  Active in approaches to involve farmer-led organizations in sustainable agriculture and natural resources management, he serves as Chair of CGIAR’s Inter-Centre Working Group on Climate Change.

Come hear Dr. Garrity relate how his institution’s four themes, Trees & Markets, Strengthening Institutions, Lands & People, and Environmental Services, contribute to the three global environmental conventions and the MDGs and discuss with him ways that SAF can contribute toward their mission.

I know you will find this NCSAF luncheon a very informative session that should not be missed.  Please RSVP to Terri Bates, batesmt@verizon.net 703-538-1134 by 12:00 noon Monday, October 8.
