December NCSAF Brown Bag Luncheon and Program December 11, 2008 National Report on Sustainable Forests Released for Review and Comment The draft National Report on Sustainable Forests: 2010 was released at the NCSAF December meeting and is now available electronically at http://www.fs.fed.us/research/sustain/2010SustainabilityReport. This draft is the second report in a series that began in 2003. Conditions and trends are reported using the 7 criteria and 64 indicators of the Montreal Process. New to this edition are: fresh data that illustrate changes during the last five years and provide more regional detail; new indicators that better reflect contemporary concerns; and examples of recent applications using the Montreal Process criteria and indicators to foster sustainable forests. The report also contains analyses of significant conditions, highlights important issues, and describes recent activities at local, State, and regional levels for improving sustainable forest management. Public review and comment on the draft report is encouraged and welcomed by the USDA Forest Service. The comment period closes April 10, 2009. Instructions on how to provide comments are contained in the front of the report. Dr. Rich Guldin, USDA Forest Service, discusses the DRAFT 2010 National Report on Sustainable Forests at the December NCSAF meeting. This marked the release of the draft report and the start of a 120-day public review and comment period. NCSAF chair’s comment: NCSAF members, as professional foresters we all have a stake in this report. I strongly encourage you to go to the website and review the report and submit comments. Don’t be overwhelmed by its length. Find the sections that you are most interested in or have expertise and provide feedback to the Forest Service. This is our 120-day opportunity to help make this report the best it can be.
The December 11 meeting of NCSAF is one not to miss. At our meeting, the Forest Service, at our meeting, will release the draft “2010 Report on the Nation’s Forests.” This report is based on the Montreal Process Criteria and Indicators to assess forest sustainability and is one way that the U.S. redeems its obligations to this international protocol. The preparation of this report has been underway for nearly two years and is now ready for public review and comment. We are indeed fortunate that the Forest Service accepted our invitation to serve as the venue for the release and the beginning of the 120-day public review and comment period. Put this date on your calendar and come find out what the data are showing us about our forests. Dr. Richard Guldin, director, Quantitative Services, USDA Forest Service Research and Development, will present the report and discuss regional trends that have become apparent since the last report. Rich will be accompanied by others from the national report team who will also discuss various aspects of the report. …And Immediately Following the Lunch – “National Sustainable Forest Report” Outreach Partners Workshop – 1:00-3:00 PM Are you interested in helping your organization and agency review and comment on the next “National Sustainable Forest Report” in order to make it a more useful and informative report? If so, you need to come to a special two-hour workshop that will help you do that. At 1:00 PM, immediately following the NCSAF luncheon program, NCSAF will join the Roundtable on Sustainable Forests in co-sponsoring a workshop for representatives from organizations and agencies who are willing to assist the roundtable in publicizing the draft report and the need for public comments and technical review. Those who are willing to be “outreach partners” will be provided with prepared information that can be utilized in their organizations, on websites, and in newsletters. The data in the report speaks for itself, but the utility of the report and information about existing data sets that could be used will help improve the report and assist in accurately reporting on the sustainability of the nation’s forest resources. If you plan to attend the workshop, please RSVP to Eric Norland, enorland@csrees.usda.gov or 202-401-5971. If you have any questions or need more information, call Eric. (This event will also take place at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) |
